Microscopic Features:
  • Very large erythroid precursor with intensely blue and often vacuolated cytoplasm
  • Nucleus with viral changes: Pale to moderate purple inclusion-like nucleoli or inclusions
Normal % blood-PB, marrow-BM, lymphoid tissue-LN:
  • PB: None
  • BM: None
  • LN: None
May Resemble: Differential Diagnoses:

Malignancy (e.g. MDS)
CMV infection (typically involves WBCs)

Misc:
  • A background of erythroid hypoplasia may also be present. Parvo B19 may be associated with Aplastic anemia and pure red cell aplasia
